Step 1: Getting filespace on Janus and connecting for the first time

This site uses Google Analytics Cookies for performance monitoring only. By using our website you agree that we can place these cookies on your device. More information can be found here.

The following should only need to be done each time the user gets a new computer.

First get your filespace and password

To enable you to upload EAD files to Janus and to ensure your filespace can be accessed by you alone you will need to be given a Janus directory and password by e-mailing all@ead.tc. Each repository will have one directory.

Connecting to Janus using DAV

Janus employs a protocol called DAV to enable the archivist to upload EAD files from their own machine to Janus itself. A DAV client sits on the archivist's own machine and interacts with Janus when you wish to upload files. Windows 2000 and later Windows incarnations incorporate easy-to-use DAV clients. There is also a DAV client built into Mac OS X, but this does not seem to work well. For this and earlier operating systems, DAV clients are available to download free. The method of doing this is slightly different depending on the type of machine and operating system that each archivist uses.

Please also note that different set-ups within institutions make it difficult to be prescriptive about the form of the name to use when creating a DAV folder. We recommend trying the variations in the list below. The last example is probably the most likely to work.

  • http://dav-janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/insert name of repository
  • http://dav-janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/insert name of repository/

Please note that users of Windows 7 might find it difficult to connect to Janus with DAV. At least one repository has found that WebDrive helps. It is available from http://www.webdrive.com/products/webdrive/index.html

On a PC (pre-Windows 2000)

  • Install Web Folders, if it is not already installed on your machine. (If in doubt, contact your computer manager)
  • Click on the icon "Web Folders" on the desktop.
  • Double-click on "Add Web Folder". In the dialog box that appears type "http://dav-janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/[your repository name]" and insert your Janus user name and password.
  • You should now see your repository's filespace on Janus with a list of files if there are any already there. Make a shortcut to this for future use.

On a PC (Windows 2000)

  • Click on the icon "My Network Places" on the desktop.
  • Double-click on "Add Network Place". In the dialog box that appears type "http://dav-janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/[your repository name]" and insert your Janus user name and password.
  • You should now see your repository's filespace on Janus with a list of files if there are any already there. Make a shortcut to this for future use.

On a PC (Windows XP)

  • Click on the icon "My Network Places" on the desktop.
  • Double-click on the "Add Network Places" icon which opens the Add Network Place Wizard.
  • Click the "Next" button until you reach the "What is the address of this network place?" window.
  • In the dialog box type "http://dav-janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/[your repository name]".
  • Click on the "Next" button and fill in your user name and password in the relevant boxes.
  • You may now choose a name for your shortcut.
  • Click on "Finish". The dialog box to access your filespace should appear and a shortcut is placed in "My Network Places".

On a pre-OS X Mac

  • Pre-OS X Macs do not have a built-in DAV client, but the Goliath DAV client is freely available.
  • Install Goliath (available from http://www.webdav.org/goliath/)
  • Using Goliath, connect to the repository's directories on Janus by using the File menu and selecting "New Connection". In the dialog box that appears type "http://dav-janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/[your repository name]" and insert the Janus username and password where requested to do so. This will make the initial connection to Janus.
  • You should now see your repository's filespace on Janus with a list of files if there are any already there.
  • At this point you may select "Save connection" from the File menu, which will save a short-cut for future connections.

On a Mac running OS X 10.1 or later

  • Mac OS X has a DAV client built in to the operating system
  • From the Go menu choose "Connect to Server"
  • In the dialog box that appears type "http://dav-janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/[your repository name]" in the dialogue box that appears and click on " Connect"
  • The next dialogue box will allow you to input your Janus username and password
  • You should now see your repository's filespace on Janus with a list of files if there are any already there. There will also be an icon on your desktop with the same name as your Janus username
  • There is also a Goliath DAV client for Mac OS X should you choose to use it (see above)
