` Until recently most holders of a university office were required to live within a prescribed number of miles from Great St Mary’s church unless permitted by the General Board to ‘ reside outwith the radius’. With the rise in Cambridge house prices beyond the level affordable by many newly appointed staff the requirement became unenforceable.
