` (1) the University Offices: the business rooms of university administrative officers and their staff, now partly in the Old Schools ; (2) certain defined appointments in the university, distinguished between ‘administrative’ officers (including the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum and the University Librarian, as well as more obviously administrative officials); and ‘teaching’ officers (e.g. professors, university lecturers). However, not all academical appointments were ‘officers’ and there was until recently a distinction (e.g. in terms of entitlement to study leave) beween ‘officers’ and ‘holders of posts’.
