` The condition of lands or tenements held inalienably by an ecclesiastical or other corporation, e.g. a university or college. By the Statutes of Mortmain, of which the first was in 7 Edward I (1278-9), such lands could not be acquired, at least without either acquiring a licence of mortmain from the crown, or hiring an expensive lawyer.
