` five-mile certificates

` Certificates previously issued by the Vice-Chancellor testifying that surrounding villages (e.g. Over!) were within five miles of the university, and so were privileged to enjoy the university’s exemption from the royal purveyors (charged with securing provisions for the court). Several examples survive in the exhibita of the Vice-Chancellor’s Court.
