` capitation fees

` A tax on all members of the university, except sizars , originally imposed in 1825 in the form of an annual payment of 1 s 6 d , payable in quarterly instalments, to provide funds for the University Library ; a further tax was introduced as a result of Sir John Patteson’s Award in 1856 whereby all members of the University, except those whose names were on the Register, paid an annual sum (2 s 8 d usually) towards the University’s contribution towards improvements in the town (drainage, paving, etc.). 6 s was also due annually from all senior Doctors, BD s, MA s and LLM s as a contribution to the University Chest. In 1866 these separate sums were combined into a single payment from all members of the university, except sizars, of 17 s .
