` assessor

` Commonly found in two contexts. 1: The Vice-Chancellor’s assessor, most visible in the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, was a paid technical advisor to the VC, especially with regard to procedure in the university courts. Other Heads of Houses who sat in judgement with the VC in, for example, trials for heresy, were also known as ‘assessors’. 2. Similarly the assessor to the Regius Professor of Physic assists with the examinations ( acts ) for the M.D. degree.
