` Great St Mary’s

` The university church, known in many early documents as ‘Sancta Maria iuxta forum’ from its position on the edge of the market place. Used, before the building of the Senate House for many university ceremonies, and still the place for university sermons and other services. Great St Mary’s was the centre from which the University grew, and the centre of the radius within which residence was required. For further details see J. Binns and P. Meadows (eds), Great St Mary’s: Cambridge's University Church (Cambridge: Great St Mary’s, 2000).
