` (pronounced DAMPT): Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics; created within the Faculty of Mathematics in 1959, largely under the influence of George Batchelor. See Reporter , 1958/9, p. 1374, for Report of the General Board on the establishment of the Department. The Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics did not follow until 1964.
