| ` Assistant Director of Research. The title of Assistant Director of Research was first assigned in 1924 to one of the persons to whom the heads of some large scientific departments had delegated, in respect of defined areas or lines of research, their duties of direction of research in their departments. Several such posts were made possible under the terms of the Rockefeller benefaction. By grace of 18 June 1932 Assistant Directors of Research were recognised as University Administrative Officers under Statute D.II.2, and their holders were made competent to hold reserved fellowships. By grace of 17 November 1934 the offices were recognised as University Teaching Offices, when that had been made possible by an amendment of Statute D.XII.1.
