According to a letter from Lt. Gen. Sir Sidney Clive, 27 March 1956, the photographs were taken by a wealthy civilian named Francis Gregson who accompanied the expedition. However, other names have been put forward. (Clive's letter is kept with the album).
An album bound in padded red leather with 'Khartum 1898' in gold on the front. The photographs have printed captions. The album documents Kitchener's campaign from the massing of forces in Egypt to the taking of Khartoum and includes the battles of Atbara and Omdurman. The photographs are of indifferent quality, but form an important historical record.
Purchased from W. Smith for 30s., 1954.

The Grenadiers during the fight. 76 x 76 mm. View looking over the heads of the soldiers, past the protective thorn zariba and towards the battlefield. The fact that nothing can be seen of the enemy indicates how little chance the Dervishes had against modern weapons of getting close enough to make their numbers and courage tell. The second bombardment of the town had begun at daybreak. At 6 am scouts reported that the enemy were advancing and at 6.50 am the 32nd Field Battery opened fire at a range of 2700 yards on the Dervishes. The Dervishes retreated at around 8 am leaving some 2000 dead on the battlefield. Good condition.. |

During the second fight. 160 x 89 mm. A view looking out over the battlefield during the second phase, with dervish corpses lying in the foreground. The second phase was a much more hard won affair during which there were many perilous moments, especially when the Khalifa brought up his Black Flag army to strike at Kitchener's right flank as his Green Flag army came down from the hills to the north. The two armies did not coincide and by 11.30 am the remnants of the Khalifa's armies had been driven off to the desert in the west, utterly broken. Fair condition, some yellowing.. |

The Khalifa lost a staggering 11,000 men killed and 16,000 wounded at Omdurman. Anglo-Egyptian losses totalled 48 killed and 382 wounded. (However, the Mahdist losses have been, and continue to be, a matter for dispute). |

Is he moving?. 122 x 122 mm. A view showing a man, possibly a correspondent, beside his camel watching a wounded dervish on the battlefield. Another aspect of the battle that came in for later criticism was the killing of wounded dervishes. In many cases, however, there was little else the advancing army could do since throughout all the Sudan campaigns it was dervish practice to fight to the death and several men were killed and wounded while attempting to help the fallen. Mahdi's tomb. 150 x 115 mm. A view looking across the mihrab towards the shell pocked tomb of the Mahdi. This damage was done during the bombardment of September 1st, the day before the battle, with howitzers firing 50lb shells using the new high explosive 'Lyddite'. The tomb, a beehive shaped building decorated inside in green and chocolate brown, was erected by the Khalifa. Around the tomb itself were protective railings taken from the Austrian Mission Church. Kitchener realising the potency of the tomb as an object of veneration among the Sudanese, ordered its destruction and the throwing of the Mahdi's bones into the Nile. This demolition was undertaken by Major W.S. Gordon, General Gordon's nephew. Kitchener later ordered the Mahdi's head to be buried at Wadi Halfa. The tomb itself has since been rebuilt and many Sudanese believe it to still contain the Mahdi's remains. The photograph is stuck on to an album page entitled 'Omdurman'. Good condition.. |

A fellow prisoner of Neufeld in Yakoub's courtyard. 160 x 109 mm. A view showing a newly released fellow-prisoner of Neufeld's in Yakoub's courtyard (Yakoub was a half-brother of the Khalifa). This man is probably Ibrahim Fawzi Pasha. Originally a cadet in the Egyptian administration in the Sudan, in 1874 he served under Gordon in Equatoria. Emin Pasha took his place when he was convicted of irregularities and for a time he was Arabi Pasha's chief of Police in Cairo (1882). Again employed by Gordon, he was in charge of the Egyptian forces during the siege of Khartoum. During his imprisonment he ran a coffee shop in Omdurman and spent some years in jail with Neufeld. C. Neufeld with his black wife and children. 157 x 107 mm. A view showing Neufeld, his Abyssinian wife Umm es Shole, two children and an unidentified prisoner. Neufeld was originally married to an English girl in 1880. On his caravan journey to the Sudan he had with him a servant Hasseena who later became his Muslim wife. Hasseena however had a penchant for theft as well as 'other undesirable proclivities' (she finally ended up in a brothel in Berber) and Neufeld divorced her. In her place he married Umm es Shole rather than the Khalifa's choice of a legally French National, a marriage Neufeld considered would be 'binding' and hence bigamous. Neufeld apparently had a daughter by Umm es Shole named Bakhita but the fate of mother and daughter is unknown. Neufeld did not take them back to Cairo with him on his release. Unlike most of the other nuns, Sister Teresa obeyed this injunction and married a Greek named Kokoromba, by whom she had two children. She remained in the Sudan for some time after her release in 1898, eventually returning to Verona where she died in 1931 (Farwell 1967, p.208-209 and 327). A view showing Molyneux and Churchill on the deck of a ship about to return to England. Molyneux, whose right arm is in a sling, and Churchill both took part in the famous charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman, a charge that made a regiment the popular heroes of Omdurman, but which was rightly condemned in military circles (and by the Sirdar himself) as a costly mistake. 'The populace has glorified the charge of the 21st for its indisputable heroism; the War Office will hardly be able to condemn it for its equally indisputable folly. That being so, it is the less invidious to say that the charge was a gross blunder. For cavalry to charge unbroken infantry, of unknown strength, over unknown ground, within a mile of their advancing infantry, was as grave as tactical crime as cavalry could possibly commit... the British cavalry in the charge itself suffered far heavier losses than it inflicted. And by its loss in horses practically put itself out of action for the rest of the day...' (Steeven 1898). Good condition.. |
