(Henry) Frederick (Ross) Catherwood was born 30 January 1925, the son of late Stuart and of Jean Catherwood. He was educated at Shrewsbury School, then at Clare College, Cambridge. In 1954, Catherwood married Elizabeth, daughter of late Rev Dr D. M. Lloyd Jones, with whom he had two sons and one daughter.
Catherwood began his career as a qualified Chartered Accountant and held senior positions within industrial firms between 1952-74. He was Conservative Member of Parliament for Cambridgeshire from 1974-84, then a European Member of Parliament for Cambridge and North Bedfordshire from 1984-94. He held several European Parliament positions and chaired the Committee for External Economic Relations (1979-84) which considered issues such as relations with the Gulf States, limitation of imports of Japanese cars, reduction of farm subsidies, and the removal of internal trade barriers. Catherwood was also Deputy Chairman of the European Democratic Group (1983-7) and Chairman of the cross-party group on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (-1993) which aimed to reduce the CAP costs. From 1983-9 and 1993-4 Catherwood was a member of the Joint Delegation between the European Parliament and the United States House of Representatives. He was also Vice-President of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee.
Catherwood's publications include "The Christian in Industrial Society" (1964, rev. edn 1980), "The Christian Citizen" (1969); "A Better Way" (1976); "First Things First" (1979); "God's Time God's Money" (1987); "Pro Europe?" (1991); "David: Poet, Warrior, King" (1993) and his memoirs "At the Cutting Edge" (1995).
The collection of papers held at Churchill Archives Centre relate to Catherwood's European Parliamentary career and include papers on economic, monetary and political union; the Common Agricultural Policy and Northern Ireland.
The collection was deposited at Churchill Archives Centre by Sir Frederick Catherwood, 1995, and by his son, Christopher Catherwood, 2008.
The papers are mainly arranged in the order imposed by Catherwood himself.

The collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required. Individual closures are marked in the catalogue.
Researchers wishing to publish excerpts from the papers must obtain prior permission from the copyright holders and should seek advice from Archives Centre staff.

Catherwood himself had described the box files which make up this collection in some detail and his descriptions have been largely retained. Biographical information was obtained from Catherwood's entry in "Who's Who" (A and C Black) and from information supplied with the collection.

Report on the consequences of the 1986 'Single Act,' which removed all barriers to internal trade in the EC and in particular whether a stronger economic, monetary and political framework was needed and what would be the loss ('the cost of non-Europe') were the enterprise to fail. Catherwood was the Rapporteur. File contains the Report, the much fuller rapporteur's Explanatory Statement and the Parliament's June 1988 Resolution.

The intergroup, The Land Use and Food Policy Intergroup (LUFPIG) raised money to commission six agricultural economists, who showed that the economics of reform allowed generous compensation to the farmers.

The European Parliament's delegation to the former Soviet Union and the Committees involved (Foreign Affairs, Economic and Foreign Trade) were concerned that the Russians could not meet the conditions laid down by the Group of Seven (G7), which insisted on currency reform before giving any aid. The hearing found that, because over half the industry in Russia and Ukraine was in defence, the IMF terms would involve a scale of redundancy without any social security which those countries could not face. They had been put in a 'catch-22.' Official documents and Parliament's Resolution. Catherwood was rapporteur.

Based on the contrast between the unconditional aid $1.5bn and the $150bn still spent by NATO on new (and mostly high-tech) weapons ($100bn) and research into new weapons ($50bn), the second hearing was into the practicability of using the Western defence budgets -and defence industry -to make the plans for joint East/West ventures aimed, under a Marshall Plan framework, to provide the industrial and agricultural infrastructure needed to get Russia and Ukraine to economic viability.
