Content and context

Note by C. P. Hall: The George, formerly an inn from at least the 16th century was used as a farmhouse for lands in the common fields of Cambridge, as shown in the Terriers (141, 148, etc.). In 1800 it was leased, together with messuages in Newnham by Mr Whittred and the farm lands sub-let to tenants in Newnham (see 158). Post-enclosure allotments were more conveniently farmed from the Newnham, Grange Road area, and the George was let as messuages, workshops, etc., without farm holdings from 1814 [159].'

Note on dorse: 'This Terrier does not correspond with the old one made 1649, & by the best comparison we can make of them, there seems to be two pieces of land wanting'. Also included are additional properties leased by the college to John Mortlock in Newnham (Ashton House Farm), Tennis Court Estate and St Thomas Leys.

152 Lease to John Mortlock, draper, for 21 years from Michaelmas 1757 of a messuage and lands etc., [Newnham Farm]. The messuage with associated yards, orchards, etc., formerly in the occupation of William Shelton and now in the occupation of John Stearn, lies next to a tenement of St John's College (S) and Butchers Close (N and W) and abuts on the highway to Grantchester (E); with lease of 8 acres and 3 roods of land in the West Fields, also a barn formerly in the occupation of William Shelton, with outbuildings; also Paschall Yard; also a yard or garden plot formerly a tenement of Richard Cage; also a rood of arable land at Dovehousehill. The annual rent comprises 26s 8d, plus one quarter and 6 and a half bushels of best Purkey wheat after the rate of 6s 8d the quarter plus two bushels of malt after the rate of 5s the quarter plus one good fat turkey, with specifications as to when the various elements are to be paid.

154 Articles of agreement. Trinity Hall to be permitted for 18 years to extract gravel from half an acre of arable land in the tenure of Whittred lying between the road running by Clare Hall Piece (E) and a balk (W) and abutting (S) towards King's College High Walk and (N) towards Garrett Hostel Lane. Trinity Hall also to construct a brick tunnel from the end of the land and under the road, for drainage, with a ditch to carry water to the tunnel, and to leave the land levelled at the end of the contract.
