This is the Chinese version of 'Why Paper and Printing were first Invented in China and use Later in Europe?', which appeared in the 'Explorations in the History of Chinese Science & Technology in China' (Shanghai, 1982) in honour of Joseph Needham's 80th birthday. It was reprinted in 'Ming Pao Monthly', Hong Kong, June, 1985. This copy was sent to Joseph Needham 'with the compliments of T. H. Tsien'.

18 Letter from T. H. Hsien about his follow-up studies in paper and printing relating to two important discoveries. The discoveries are a Buddhist sutra found at Wenchou, Chekiang, China, said to have been printed with moveable type c. 1103; the appearance of the character ? [Chih/Zhi] on bamboo tablets from the Chhin tomb of the late Chan-kuo period. The documents also include Hsien's notes on these discoveries.
