40 Correspondence with Dr. K. Lundbaek of Aarhus University, Denmark, about the origin of Chu Hsi's passage about the analogy of the cosmos with a a square pallet chain pump. The passage is quoted on page 359 of the volume. Lundbaek describes how he 'stumbled over it while working with the Introduction to the 'Confucius Sinarum Philosopus''. He states 'it looks as if the passage marked with an asterisk could be the one you translated from Wieger's quote'. The documents also include a photocopy of this marked text.

The letter sets out Mayr's reasons for disagreeing with Joseph Needham's argument in 'Heavenly Clockwork' that 'a certain Chinese water clock should be the ancestor of the mechanical clock'.
