Narborough in Colchester, Essex explaining that in the philosophy of science the 'liquidation of the self' is vital for the growth of man's knowledge of the natural world. Joseph Needham's letter is in response to Narborough's 'admirable words about Traherne and the necessity of the liquidation of the self in all good human relations as well as creative activity' on the day of the 'patronal feast at Thaxted'. Needham quotes Francis Bacon, T. H. Huxley and others.
