Isaac Titsingh was a Dutch explorer, diplomat and administrator, who went to Japan as the Dutch Envoy in 1778 and served as Director of the Dutch East India Company factory at Nagasaki (Deshima Island) for three periods between 1779 and 1784.

Needham/NRI2/SCC2/33 contains:
1 Letter from Frank Lequin of the Center for Japanese and Korean Studies at the Rijksuniversiteit te Leiden, Holland introducing the Titsingh project and asking Joseph Needham to act as referee in funding applications. The documents also include a copy of Needham's reply; a description of the project.

2 Letter from Frank Lequin of the Center for Japanese and Korean Studies at the Rijksuniversiteit te Leiden, Holland about the progress of his research on Isaac Titsingh. Lequin advises Joseph Needham of a find 'in the Archives' of 'a complete inventory of all his belongings, of his whole estate at the day of his death in Paris'..'including a description of his (the first) japanological collection plus chinese books and coins!'.
