Cranmer-Byng about his discovery of a manuscript of an appendix of Lord Macartney's observations on China with attached observations on the state of medicine, surgery and chemistry in China by Dr. Hugh Gillan. Cranmer-Byng explains that he found the manuscript while 'preparing for publication an edition of Lord Macartney's Journal of his embassy to China in the years 1792-94'. He suggests that 'you might be interested to read what an amateur scientist who visited China in 1793 was able to discover about these subjects'. The documents also include related Joseph Needham notes; heavily annotated typescript description of the embassy of Lord Macartney carrying an 'orrery' to China.
