Hu explains how he in met Joseph Needham in the 1940s at the West China Union University and that he took 'one-third of my reprints on the Medicinal Plants of Chengtu Herb-shops (five copies) for distribution out side China'. The related documents comprise a copy of Needham's letter of reply; copy of a letter from H. M. Chang of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to Hu, endorsing the project; copy of Hu's application for financial assistance from UNESCO for the project, providing a detailed plan for the work.
