Content and context

Photographs taken by Joseph Needham on the long journey to the southeast, when he and SBSCO staff member H.T. Huang (Huang Hsing-Tsung / Huang Xingzong) ??? travelled from Chungking (Chongqing) ??? through the provinces of Kweichow (Guizhou) ???, Kuangsi (Guangxi) ???, Chiangsi (Jiangxi) ???, Kuangtung (Guangdong) ??? and Fukien (Fujian) ??? and back. They did not travel all the way by truck, and he only took photographs sporadically. There are also some photographs (in SE3) taken in Chungking in March 1944 before the journey. The films and their photographs were not originally labelled in strict chronological order. Some sections of the negatives have not been developed because there are no images on the negative or because any images present are too severely damaged or indistinct. No entry has been made for these. The number of photographs for such a long journey is surprisingly small, but conditions were hard and Needham may have been without his camera for parts of the journey.
