Photographs

Photographs taken by Joseph Needham on the long expedition to the northwest from Chungking (Chongqing) ??? to Djiayukuan (Jiayuguan) ??? in Kansu (Gansu) Province ??? and back, via Chengtu (Chengdu) ???, Lanchow (Lanzhou) ??? and many other places. Note that on this journey he travelled beyond Djiayuguan to the Buddhist caves at Chienfotung (Qianfodong) ??? near Tunhuang (Dunhuang) ?? in Kansu, the photographs for which are in CFT. The Northwest journey was undertaken from 7th August – 14th December 1943, but there are a few photographs taken before and after the journey on rolls NW2 and NW6. On the outward leg of the journey to Lanchow, Needham was accompanied by SBSCO staff members H.T. Huang (Huang Hsing-Tsung / Huang Xingzong) ??? and Liao Hung-Ying (Liao Hongying) ???, as well as Edward Beltz, an American oil geologist, and a young scientist Chen Tzu-hsin (Chen Zixin) ???. In another truck travelled the famous explorer Sir Eric Teichman (1884-1944). From Lanchow to Chienfodong and back he was accompanied by H.T. Huang (who travelled back to Lanchow separately), Rewi Alley (1897-1987), Sun Kuang-chun (Sun Guangjun) ??? and Wang Wan-sheng (Wang Wansheng) ???, two boys from the Lanchow Bailie School ??????, the painter Wu Tso-Rjen (Wu Zuoren) ???, as well as a driver, Kuang Wei ??, and a mechanic from Lanchow Yu Te-hsin (Yu Dexin) ???. The films and their photographs were not originally labelled in strict chronological order. Some sections of the negatives have not been developed because there are no images on the negative or because any images present are far too severely damaged or indistinct. No entry has been made for these.
