Until the grant of a Royal Charter in 1948, the BFBS was a voluntary Society, responsible ultimately to a general meeting of its members. The Annual General Meeting appointed the Committee and Treasurer, approved the accounts and the annual Report. Special general meetings could be called when necessary, usually to appoint a new Treasurer or to make an alteration to the constitution.
The records consist of minutes of General Meetings and legal documents enabling the Society to hold money and property (one trust deed and records of the Incorporated BFBS Association) .
More recent records are at Swindon.
