Content and context

Smith was born in Doncaster in 1871 and attended the local grammar school. He was admitted to St John's College in 1889, graduating BA in 1892. Following ordination, Smith served as Curate of St Philip's, Dalston (1895-1903), Curate of St John's, Hackney (1903-7), Vicar of St Peter's, Hornsey (1907-25), Vicar of Willesden (1925-37), and Vicar of St Mary Abbots, Kensington (1937-48). He was also appointed Prebendary of St Paul's Cathedral in 1935. Smith was the joint editor of 'The Sundays of Man's Life'. He married Dora Cox in 1903, and died at Littlehampton, Sussex, in 1952.

Papers relating to the Royal Family. These items formed part of a collection of papers found in the drawer of a dresser in the drawing room of the Master's Lodge in 2004. Other items from this bundle relating to Masters and the Master's Lodge (c. 1908-90) are now in the College Archives.

1 An empty brown envelope. On the front is typed the following note:. 'Council minute 1942/2 (i) dated 28 July 1950. Agreed gratefully to accept from Prebendary A.E. Smith (B.A. 1892) the gift of a table made in the Queen's Carving School and given by His Majesty King George V to him at Sandringham in 1930.'. Below is the following manuscript note:. 'The papers in this envelope were in the drawer of the table referred to in the above Council Minute when the table was given to the College. The papers included a letter from King George V to Prebendary Smith, now placed in the College Library [now Misc. Papers GE1]. The remaining papers, which have an association through Prebendary Smith with the table, are left in the drawer. The table is identified by an inscribed plate on its underside. 14 May 1969. J.S. Boys Smith.'.

Expresses grief at the recent death of Queen Maud of Norway (1869-1938, daughter of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra), requests his prayers, and asks him to arrange a joint requiem for Maud and Prince Arthur of Connaught.

15 Autograph letter signed from John James, Kensington Palace, to Smith. Princess Louise has signed a photograph for him and sends her best wishes to him and Mrs Smith for 1939. In commemoration of 'your service in her bedroom' the Princess has asked James for the date that she may write it on the back of the photograph.

18 Notebook containing prayers and devotional poems. A notebook in a large sloping hand, numbered at the bottom of the front cover 1997, containing an expanded version of the Lord's Prayer, and other prayers and devotional poems. In the front are three press cuttings: two reporting the death of Princess Louise (3 Dec. 1939), and the conduct of her cremation by Smith and those in attendance; and a cutting from the 'Manchester Guardian' recording the sculpting by Louise of a statuette of Queen Victoria over the west entrance of Manchester Cathedral. Inserted further in the book is a small card with Christmas wishes for 1938, signed Beatrice.
