Content and context

Physicist. Morton was admitted to St John's College in 1889 following schooling at Belfast Royal Academy and Queen's College, Belfast. He graduated BA in 1892, as 8th Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos. Morton then returned to Queen's College, Belfast, where he served as Assistant in Natural Philosophy (1892-7) and then Professor (1897-1933). He published various papers in 'Philosophical Magazine', 'Proceedings of the Physical Society', and 'Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy'.

14 notebooks containing notes taken by Morton at lectures he attended 1889-1892, mostly given by R.R. Webb, others by J. Larmor, H.F. Baker, G.H. Darwin and R. Pendlebury. They include notes on the following subjects: Statics (Webb), Newton (Webb), Particle Dynamics (Webb), Rigid Dynamics (Webb), Hydrostatics (Webb), Planetary Theory (Darwin), Physical Optics, Geometrical Optics (Larmor, Webb), Mathematical Physics (Larmor), Astronomy (Webb).

Given by W.B. Morton, Oct. 1941. Includes three letters from Morton to F.P. White, College Librarian, and two from W.H. McCrea to White concerning the donation.

The notebooks are arranged chronologically by year and term.
