Recommends a publication regarding the possession of Mediterranean islands as a counter balance to Napoleon's continental Empire. Suggests that Colworth, though beautiful, is not worthy of the title: 'Montpellier of England'. Advises Lee of the correspondent's overcoming of his troubles through the help of friends.

Tells of visiting the recently destroyed fortress of Omar Aga and the house of the Kurdish heroine Haiva Hatun and gives a short anecdote concerning her ways of dealing with servant admirers. Asks for Lee to procure and despatch a water fountain to him.

Is disappointed that Lee will not be visiting and suggests that Lee is working too hard. Describes difficulty with getting letters to Canada and asks Lee to forward a letter to a Mr Archer. Also attached is a letter to a Mr Smith regarding assistance given in the placing of Mr Smith's son with a business. Gives names and addresses of useful contacts but also points out that business is bad.

Thanks Lee for help with a business arrangement and asks for a small loan to help pay for an insurance policy. Notes the success of Lee's Temperance Society and gives news of his sons involvement in a similar Club. Gives news of grandson's education and hopes to see Fiott in near future. Notes Lee's recent public remarks on the present Government and feels sure that they will triumph.

Gives reasons why payments to Lee have lapsed and hopes that new arrangements will be agreeable. Glad to see that Lee's philanthropic activities continue and is apologetic that current circumstances mean he can do little to help.

Doc 54 A. L. s., from J. W. Hawksley to John Lee from Redruth. Describes beauty of surroundings and suggests that writing is as important as mathematics. Hopes that the ideas of the Permanent Peace Society and Peace of Nations Society eventually triumph, and that the two Societies will be able to reach agreement over the issue of self-defence. Intimates that they shouldn't split hairs in the face of a bigger battle and an alliance must be formed. Makes case that once the idea of offensive war is abandoned then logically there will be an end to defensive war. Lays out argument justifying self-preservation and the acceptability of taking of life in extreme cases in a long, rambling account, using scriptures to illustrate point. Praises the Quakers and wishes two societies will come together to abolish war system. Apologises for long, badly written diatribe and blames interruptions from noisy children. Refers to article written in Herald of Peace to further illustrate point. Finally, advocates a police force to maintain law and order.
