Content and context

Mathematician. Miles Bland was born in Sedbergh in 1786. He attended Sedbergh School before entering St John's College, where he graduated BA, as second wrangler, in 1808. Bland was elected to a Fellowship of the College in the same year, and later became Tutor, Moderator and Public Examiner in Mathematics. He published various Biblical commentaries and mathematical textbooks, and was a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Society of Antiquaries, and the Royal Astronomical Society. He died in 1867.
