Content and context

(Pages numbered 1-4 then 8-11) Addresses Garbo as 'Mrs Rokeby'. Writes that she is a 'very nice cook - most respectable and a quiet influence in the house'. Refers to the news that her husband may have to lose a second leg. Writes that his current pace is slow compared to that of New York, from which it has taken him three weeks to 'calm down'. Mentions that he has had a bad cold. Describes Spring at Reddish. Encourages Garbo to visit him on her way to the South. Instructs her to contact Mr Priest? who will make her travel arrangements. Likens Mr Priest to Mr George Schlee. Refers to a long drive and talk with Clarissa Eden. Describes the circumstances of the death of his friend, (Victor William) Peter Watson (1908-1956). Eulogises Peter Watson. Plans to travel to Chantilly on the following Thursday to visit Diana for a few days, then return to England. Hopes to 'do a lot of painting - and no theatre jobs for some time'. Writes that he might travel to New York on September 1st to do some theatre work but his contract is not yet signed. Sends news of Simon, the School Master, MCan, and the Salisburys. Refers to his house and garden improvements.
