Has just been reading "The Years Between" and Beaton has stirred up some pleasant memories of the wartime China days. Has often thought of the trek in the rain that he let Beaton in for. Stayed on in Kweilin with force 136 until they had to evacuate when the Japanese attacked. Then went to Kunming until the end of the war. Went and lived most of his life in Shanghai until evacuated by the communists. Retired to Italy 6 years ago. Married an English artist after the war. Is now occupied with remaking the enclosed garden. Advises Beaton to visit Siam one day. Will look up his old friend Leo Handley-Derry next time he is in London. |
