St John's Library/Beaton/A1/128 contains:
1 Typescript letter signed to Beaton, from London. Beaton's photographs are beautiful, especially the subject ones. Would like to buy a print of the one showing a magnolia tree. Has talked to Francis about Beaton going out as an official photographer and he thinks something could be arranged. Will talk to Bevan to see if he can get Beaton a place on the permanent staff.
1p; paper.
29 Apr. 1940
2 Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from London. Asks if Beaton will dine at his house on Tuesday. Could take Beaton out in a car, leaving the National Gallery at seven. Knows it is asking a lot, but would like to see Beaton.
2p; paper.
17 Oct. 1942
3 Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from London. Thanks Beaton for one of the 'most heart warming letters' he has ever received. To have a word of praise from Beaton is enough to make his 'swollen head burst'. Was glad that it was entertaining. Asks if Beaton would like to have lunch at Albany sometime. They are leaving a week on Wednesday.
2p; paper.
1 June 1969
4 Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from Kent. Discusses and praises Beaton's photographs. Beaton is a 'great flatterer'. He gave a perfect impression of their bungalow. Describes 'disastrous' trip.
2p; paper.
5 Nov. 1973
5 Typescript letter signed to Beaton, from Kent. Thanks Beaton for his letter. Jane has had a stroke and her left side is paralysed. She has been in hospital for a fortnight and has made no progress. The doctors say she may go to a nursing home in Hythe. No one will tell him what the prospects are, but he does not think they are very bright.
1p; paper.
23 Dec. 1973
6 Typescript letter signed to Beaton, from Kent. Thanks Beaton for his letter. After they had moved down to Kent, Jane had a slight set-back. Now she is making a little progress. She is being well looked after and the food is 'better than any London restaurant'. The nursing home is not far from the Garden House so he can pay her lots of visits. Hopes that Beaton's mumps are better.
2p; paper.
7 Jan. 1974
7 Typescript letter signed to Beaton, from Kent. A long and sweet letter arrived for Jane from Irene. It has put everything right. Feels that they owe this to Beaton. Thinks that Beaton must have told Irene how worried Clark was. Understood why she had not been able to come down, but 'when one has been ill for five months things get out of proportion'. If Beaton has time to spare in the summer he must come to visit.
1p; paper.
31 May 1974
8 Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from Kent. Thanks Beaton for his letter. Jane was always grateful for Beaton's letters and postcards. She always used to say that she must write to Beaton, but towards the end writing became impossible for her. She had a peaceful end. Beaton was 'a dear' to write to her so often. Hopes Beaton has as many happy moments as Jane did.
