Papers of John Couch Adams

Title Manuscript copies of two propositions regarding Neptune
Reference 1/6
Creator Unknown
Covering Dates 1847 (Undated.)
Extent and Medium 9p; paper
Content and context

'Proposition I. The planet Neptune accounts for the previously unexplained irregularities in the motions of Uranus so perfectly that Uranus no longer indicates the probable existence of an unknown external planet or of any error in the mass of Saturn. Proposition II. Neptune is not the planet which was predicted by geometry.'

Possibly connected with the attacks by Peirce, Babinet and others on the veracity of Adams's and LeVerrier's results. Probably originally sent to Adams enclosed with a letter.
