William Pole, 1st duke of Suffolk (1396-1450), played a leading part in every aspect of the Foundation of King's College and Eton College, from its financing and planning through to the actual building of the colleges and the devising of their statutes; it was Suffolk and not the king who laid the first stone of King's College chapel.
