Sir Robert Stawell Ball (1840-1913) was educated at Trinity College Dublin, worked as Lord Rosse's astronomer at Birr Castle 1865-67, Royal Astronomer of Ireland 1874-92, and was knighted in 1886. When he was appointed Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry to the University of Cambridge in 1892, he was made a Professorial Fellow of King's.
