Content and context

Philip FitzHugh Radcliffe (1905-1986) came up to King's College in 1924 with a Classics scholarship, changing after Part I to study music. In 1931 he was elected a Fellow of the College; his dissertation continued the work of Richard Tery and Edmund Fellowes on sixteenth and seventeenth century music. During his Fellowship, Radcliffe began teaching for the College, and expanded his knowledge of music of the classical and romantic periods. He was appointed University Lecturer in Music in 1947. In addition to lecturing, Radcliffe was a composer and an active member of the Ten Club playreading society. He died in a car crash with his sister, Susan, in 1986.

The papers contain material relating to the university's productions of Greek plays, a copy of Radcliffe's Fellowship Dissertation, and three printed books owned by Radcliffe.

The papers were given to King's College on 13 Aug. 1986. Further papers of Philip Radcliffe have not yet been catalogued and are not available to readers.
