The Papers of Professor Joan Violet Robinson

Title Field notebooks and travel journals
Reference JVR/11
Covering Dates 1945–1979
Extent and Medium 8 volumes, 11 notebooks and 3 envelopes; paper
Content and context

This series comprises items that constitute a personal record of Joan Robinson's travels in Europe, Asia and Central America. They include travel notes, itineraries, and field notes recording visits to factories, farms, and other places. Particularly detailed are the notes taken while in China during 1963-4, 1967 and 1972.

Most of Joan Robinson's field notes were placed in notebooks on which the recto sides of the sheets were used, then the notebook turned round and started again from the back. When describing the contents of these notebooks, the information on the recto pages has been listed first, with that on the verso sides listed thereafter. Recto references appear as straight numbers (e.g., [ff. 1-4]), while references to pages written after the notebook had been turned around have a 'v' after the folio numbers and the pages seem to appear in reverse order (e.g. [ff. 4v-1v]).
