The Papers of John Saltmarsh

Title Notes, Transcripts, Indexes and Tables
Reference JS/2
Covering Dates 1930–1974 (Many documents undated.)
Extent and Medium 5 boxes; paper
Content and context

The preparatory material that comprises this series forms the background analysis which John Saltmarsh used in his histories of Cambridge and King's College. They relate directly to 'King's College. A Short History', The 'Victoria County History' and his lectures.

A separate section has been created for these preliminary writings and computations because they cannot be linked with certainty to any single work. Although John Saltmarsh himself did not create any divisions among the papers, broad categories can be distinguished and have been imposed by the Archivist to bring a subject-oriented focus to the miscellaneous notes. The broad categories are (in order): 'King's College Chapel' (JS/2/1-14), 'Computations from the Bursar's Accounts and Commons Books' (JS/2/15-17), 'Trades and Individuals' (JS/2/18-23), 'King's College Buildings and Inventories' (JS/2/24-31), 'King's College Archives' (JS/2/32-34), 'King's College Estates' (JS/2/35-44), 'Grantchester' (JS/2/45-9), 'Kersey Priory' (JS/2/50) and 'Cambridge: University and Town' (JS/2/51-3).
