Title Writings
Reference JS/1
Covering Dates 1924–1977
Extent and Medium 18.5 boxes; paper
Content and context

This series comprises items written by John Saltmarsh, including published writings, University lectures, public lectures, and preparatory materials. The history and architecture of King's College figure prominently, but there are also many pieces addressing history and architecture in Cambridgeshire and in England more generally.

The published writings of John Saltmarsh have been listed as JS/1/1-18, followed by his lectures (JS/1/19-35) and unpublished materials pertaining to his writings (JS/1/36-83). Drafts, notes, lists, indexes and correspondence generated in the production of a particular work have been grouped together and arranged in the following order: Saltmarsh's dissertation on the estates of King's College and beneficial leasing (JS/1/36-7), 'King's College Memorials' (JS/1/38-61), 'King's College Chapel. A History and Commentary' (JS/1/62-74), 'King's College and its Chapel' (JS/1/75-6), 'King's College. A Short History' (JS/1/77-8), 'Victoria County History of Cambridgeshire' (JS/1/79-82) and 'History of Cambridge Colleges' (JS/1/83).

For further information concerning the public lectures delivered by John Saltmarsh (JS/1/22-35), see the introduction to JS/1/22.

For further information about materials for the projected six-volume work 'Memorials of King's College' (JS/1/38-61), see the introduction to JS/1/38.
