Content and context

Sir John Harold Clapham (1873-1946) came up to King's in 1892 from the Leys School in Cambridge. He graduated with a first in 1895 and won the Lightfoot scholarship in ecclesiastical history in 1896, followed in 1898 by his fellowship dissertation. In 1902 he accepted the Professorship of Economics at Yorkshire College, shortly to become the University of Leeds. He returned to King's as a Fellow in 1908, was Dean 1908-13 and Tutor 1913-28 when he was made Professor of Economic History, which position he held until his formal retirement in 1938. He was Vice-Provost from 1933 until 1943. He was made a Fellow of the British Academy in 1928 and was its President from 1940 to 1946. He was made CBE in 1918 and was knighted in 1943.

This collection comprises correspondence and lecture notes, with a commonplace book and a few miscellaneous personal papers.

Call marks Misc. 31/1-13 were given to King's College Library by Lady Clapham in 1947. Provenance for other items is listed with each item, where known.

5 Letter from F. Fortune to Sir J[ohn] C[oxe] Hippsley. F. Fortune wrote from 6 Downing Street, Westminster. Sir John Coxe Hippsley came up to Trinity College in 1811. The letter encloses a copy of a letter from Lord Melville, 28 Apr.1812, with a plan and description of a proposed canal from Erith to Woolwich.

Most articles discuss the trade unions strike (general strike) and its effects on food supplies, motoring, and postal services. Includes the list of Cambridgeshire civil commissioners and staff, and details of the day's broadcasting, including 'transmission from the London station of "Dido and Aeneas," an opera by Purcell, edited by Edward J. Dent and conducted by Percy Pitt.'.
