Content and context

This series contains manuscripts, typescripts and proofs of verse composed by T.S. Eliot, many with corrections and notes on revision. Included are materials concerning 'The Waste Land', 'Little Gidding' and 'Four Quartets' among others. Files within this series also contain a limited amount of correspondence related to revision and publication, as well as some related papers.

King's/PP/HB/V contains:
1 'Poems Written in Early Youth'. Compiled by J.D. Hayward and privately printed at Stockholm in an edition of 12 copies, 1950. J.D. Hayward's manuscript and typed copy photostats of original sources, two sets of proofs, correspondence with the printer. (There is another set of proofs with the copy in the Printed Books section of the Hayward Bequest, Gallup A56; HC.8.6.).

2A 'If Time and Space as Sages Say'. Two eight-line stanzas. Manuscript in ink. 24 Jan. 1905 with covering letter from T.S. Eliot to J.D. Hayward, 19 Aug. 1943 explaining that it is 'the original draft of the first poem I ever wrote to be shown to other eyes'.

Bought from Mr. Leonard Woolf, 1967, with a letter from Mr. Woolf to the Librarian of 10 Dec. 1966, giving the history of the typescript, which was sent to him and Virginia Woolf in Oct. 1928 for criticism.
