Friedman wrote an article 'Tribes, States and Transformations' which appeared in a book by Maurice Bloch, 'Marxist Analyses and Social Anthropology'. His article reinterprets Leach's data on the Kachin of Burma. This item is a passionate TS rebuttal by Leach, possibly never published.

The letter ends with 'Readers of this copy of the micr[o]film a[re] asked to adhere to the normal courtesies of scholarly usage'. ERL's thesis was written in 1947.
