E.M.L. Forster's design for a mantelpiece, built and given to Mrs. Synnott (Mrs. Aylward) in the 1870s, and given by Mrs. Aylward to E.M.L. Forster's widow, E.M. Forster's mother, in the 1880s. E.M. Forster's mother first put-up the mantelpiece at Rook's Nest and later in each of the houses subsequently occupied by her and her son, including Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Weybridge, West Hackhurst and Abinger Hammer. Moved to E.M. Forster's rooms at King's College, Cambridge in 1946. The file also contains a short typescript description of the mantelpiece.
