Poetry. Chrystable Procter's poetry falls into four distinct categories: her African verses, religious verse, humorous verse, and poems about events. In most cases there are manuscript and typescript copies. Some were entered for competitions and published. Many of the African verses were used by the Tanganyika Broadcasting Services 1955 and 1957 - later CP had typescript copies made of these poems in attempt to publish them in the late 1970s. Some of the poems on religious themes are written for specific festivals such as 'St Michael's Mass' and 'Candlemas Rhyme for Children'. Two poems, 'The Cow' and the 'The Earl and the Gardener' have been illustrated (the latter by 'FMH') and printed but there is no indication of publication. With the poems are some letters of appreciation and letters concerning publication. There are also two manuscript essays: 'Persis Marriage' (about the life of her friend Persis Marriage 1882-1979) and 'The Private Nursing Home'. Poems in the file are dated between 1955 and 1974 but there is evidence that CP wrote poetry throughout her adult life. Creator: Procter, Chrystabel. 1 file; Paper. |
