Joyce Mary Freeman Penny was born on the 21st of May 1912 in Ealing. She attended Notting Hill and Ealing High School. She attended Girton College from 1933 to 1936, reading English. She had a poem published in the Girton Review (Easter, 1936, p. 9). She later worked as a researcher at the Foreign Office and for the Treasury. She translated many Latin poems, having one book of translations of Latin poetry published, entitled 'Latin Lyrics Translated', in 1953. She also wrote her own poetry, short stories, and a novel, 'Marjorie Maltravers'. Between 1948 and 1985 she corresponded with Piloo Jungalwalla (Nanavutty), another Girtonian. Piloo Jungalwalla was born in Bombay on the 30th June 1914 and read English Part I (at the same time as Joyce Penny) and Archaeology and Anthropology Part II at Girton College. She later worked as a lecturer and teacher in English and literature in Bombay. She lived in New Delhi when she corresponded with Joyce Penny.
Joyce Penny died on the 2nd December 1988.
8990/27; 9091/49 - Part of this collection was given by Mrs Minchin in March 1990 (8990/27). Agnes Marjorie Minchin (Robertson) came up to Girton in 1933 to read Classics. She went onto become a Classics teacher.
The second part of this collection was given by Piloo Jungalwalla in July 1991 (9091/49). Piloo Jungalwalla was a life long friend of Joyce Penny.
