Kathleen Mary Peace was born in Cambridge on 24 April 1904, where her father was Fellow and sometime Bursar of Emmanuel College, and University Printer 1916-1923. They lived at 1 Wollaston Road. She attended the Perse High School for Girls, and was a College Scholar at Girton 1923-26 where she read Mathematics under the direction of Frances Cave-Brown-Cave. She gained a Class II degree, followed by an MA in 1930.
After her degree, she attended a secretarial course in London. She returned to Girton in 1927 to become Assistant to the College Secretary, Mary Clover, whom she succeeded in 1933. She was Secretary to the College Council and all its committees, and responsible for the Entrance and Scholarship Examinations. She was made a Staff Fellow in 1936, Life Fellow in 1964, and was Member of College Council from 1945. She was Honorary Treasurer of the 'Girton Review' 1935-63.
She contributed several obituaries, book reviews and articles to the 'Girton Review', a notable history being an account of an outbreak of smallpox at the college in 1878, which ended in a libel case. In 'Smallpox and Slander', she relates the story of how a Mr Farren, who took in students as lodgers at his house near to the college during the outbreak, brought an action against an American student called Miss Minturn who had complained of 'terrible smells from neglected drains' at his house. Miss Mintern won the case.
Her sense of humour is reflected in her own verse, sketches and anecdotes, where she parodies college meetings and protocols, along with those of colleagues, which she also collected.
She retired to Ticehurst in Sussex in 1964, and died suddenly on 14 March 1974.
The papers comprises a diverse collection of notes and writings on philosophy, religion and ethics, from 1936-48 with critical responses from Helen Wodehouse; verses; college papers; letters; leaflets, and other miscellaneous ephemera and artefacts.
These papers were found in College by Poppy Jolowicz, who succeeded Kathleen Peace as Secretary to Council. The transfer to the Archive is not documented.
