Content and context

The material listed here encompasses the whole of Dorothy Needham's research career. It includes undergraduate notebooks used by D N for lectures and practical work for the Cambridge Natural Sciences Tripos, 1915-19, and notes on all aspects of her research work: from postgraduate and postdoctoral research under F G Hopkins and work in the 1930s on ATP (adenosinetriphosphate), to wartime research on chemical defence and post-war research on enzyme biochemistry. Consists of lecture notes and drafts, bibliographical references, notes on lectures by others, research data etc, and a set of 60 notebooks containing bibliographical references for Machina Carnis. There are several series of notebooks whose dates overlap. Among the loose items found enclosed within the larger notebooks were drafts for lectures delivered in China during the war. Also relating to D N's work in China is a small hand-drawn map.
