Isabella Lewis was born in London, the daughter of a business man, and educated at Notting Hill High School. She came up to Girton as a College Scholar to read Mathematics 1889-92 and took advantage of the quasi ad eundem degrees offered by Trinity College Dublin to suitably qualified Oxbridge women to obtain an MA (TCD) in 1906. (She was preceded to Girton by her sister Ethel Jane in 1882). She taught at Blackheath School and Wycombe Abbey. After her retirement, she travelled to New Zealand to live for several years, returning to Britain in 1942.
College and University degree certificates 1892 (in the latter, IML is declared to have been placed in the 2nd Class of successful candidates, between 64 and 65 - Senior Optime). The certificates appear to be in the original cardboard roll sent by Girton in 1892 and forwarded by IML to the Teacher's Registration Council in 1902. With the certificates is a letter from IML's great-niece, Isabel Burn to the Archivist 05.05.2006 about her great-aunt's life.
Given by Isabel Burn (Bennett 1953), May 2006.
