Content and context

These include lectures, papers and reports on Fegan's study of the education of women and girls in Nigeria, including her Gilchrist Report 1928-29 and her report on the 'Tour of British West Africa' for the Carnegie Corporation 1941-42, and some material on the effect of western civilisation on African students in Great Britain. There are also Fegan's own publications on the subject and her various collected publications, including the Northern Provinces Advisory Council [of Nigeria] record of proceedings at meetings with native rulers and emirs and chiefs 1930-31. There is reference to her work and interest in leper colonies, and to her study and teaching of librarianship in Africa. In addition there are two photographs presented to her by Akarigbo of Remo in remembrance of his silver jubilee, September 1941, and a photograph of Ethel Fegan and the Benin City Library Committee (with modern copy made circa 2000) while she was visiting libraries for the Carnegie Corporation, November 1941.

2 'Report on a Tour to the West Coast of Africa to study the Education of Women'. Also known as her 'Gilchrist Report' this is Ethel Fegan's account of women's education in the then British colonies on the West Coast of Africa: Nigeria, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone and Gambia. She made a year's tour of these areas August 1928 - August 1929 collecting data about the types of people, statistics of population and schools, historical and present problems in education, the curriculum, and the need for teachers. She was granted a sabbatical from Girton College to make the tour and received funding from the Gilchrist Trustees. There are two copies of the report, one bound into a folder (typescript 91pp plus 19pp itinerary), the other looseleaf in an envelope (typescript 89pp).

14 'Tour of British West Africa for the Carnegie Corporation, N Y'. Two volumes of manuscript notes made by EF of her tour 1941-42 to assess library services in West Africa for the Carnegie Corporation, New York, who were considering grant aide. With the notes is her report March - June 1941, her general recommendations for the Gold Coast for the Carnegie Lending Library 20.06.1941, and her final recommendations 25.06.1941. There is a photograph pf Benin City Library Committee 11.11.1941, while EF was visiting libraries for the Carnegie Corporation. EF is seated in the front row, with the (all male) committee. There is also two copies a published pamphlet by 'Libraries in Africa' (London: Sheldon Press [1944]) of talks prepared for broadcasting in Africa from local stations following the Carnegie tour and an article 'Libraries, present and potential in West Africa' in the 'East and West Review' vol.3 no.3, July 1942.

It is difficult to date, some sections were obviously written in about 1935, but revisited later.

Letter to Ethel Fegan from David Miles (for the Ministry of Education, Northern Nigeria) 15.10.1958 inviting EF to help with the script of a pageant to show the progress of education as part of the celebrations. With the letter is a brief for the pageant, and what appears to be EF's notes for a contribution. Headed 'Education of Muslim girls in Northern Nigeria', the notes describe her visits to British West Africa between 1928 and 1954 and her educational work (typescript 9pp). One page of the notes is dated 01.11.1958.
