Content and context

This section includes school reports; certificates; photographs; biographical material; correspondence and papers concerning AD's entry to Girton and various appointments; and speeches. The section is arranged broadly chronologically. [NB: there is further correspondence relating to appointments etc in the general correspondence series at GCPP Duke 2/1.]

Girton/GCPP Duke 1 contains:
1 The Ladies of Castlebrae. The life of Dr Agnes Smith Lewis and Dr Margaret Dunlop Gibson, by A Whigham Price, being the text of the annual lecture to the Presbyterian Historical Society, October 1964. Flyleaf signed 'J Stevenson' [AD's mother]. [ASL and MDG were twin sisters, nee Smith, born Irvine, Ayrshire January 1843, who became Semitic scholars and benefactors to Westminster College, Cambridge and later lived at Castlebrae on Chesterton Road, Cambridge.] Together with the following items:. 1) cutting from the Cambridge Daily News, 31 August 1977, concerning the connection between ASL and MDG and the Taylor-Schechter Collection at Cambridge University Library;. 2) sepia photograph of Mrs Gibson, Mrs Lewis and a Mrs Jane Sturge, nd [circa 1910?], originally sellotaped inside The Ladies of Castlebrae;. 3) in Johanna Stevenson's hand, 'Thoughts on Sept 6th 1975 (not spoken at the wedding)' - being thoughts of friendship, presumably towards a couple getting married on that day, though no names are given - possibly descendants of ASL and MDG?.

15 'Cambridge Today' - speech given in Edinburgh. Ms text of a speech given by AD in Edinburgh [September 1960?] [at St George's School? - Jean Lindsay became headmistress there in 1960] entitled 'Cambridge Today'. Touches on developments in Cambridge such as Churchill College, New Hall, Fitzwilliam College, and the Sidgwick Avenue site; also the status of women undergraduates, including a reference to Union Society membership remaining exclusively male and references to the social lives of women undergraduates, marriage patterns on going down from Cambridge etc. As Girton College Praelector - 'my only regret is that the Syndicate decided against giving to women Praelectors the title of 'Mother of the College', to correspond to the title of 'Father of the College', which is borne by their masculine colleagues'.

Article written by AD for Despatches [the newsletter of the Arthur Ransome Society], 1998, being an account of her undergraduate years as a Classicist in Cambridge, to be used as background to an edition of Despatches devoted to Arthur Ransome's novel entitled Missee Lee, in which the character of the title is educated at Cambridge. Together with related material including: correspondence with Trevor Johnston and Ruth Buckley (G 1947), editors of Despatches, 1998-99, and 2 cassette tapes of a radio play of the book.
