Content and context

The Moore and Smith families first had contact in the 1840s when Robert Moore contested the borough of Hastings for free trade in 1844. Norman Moore was befriended by Barbara and Eugene Bodichon in 1869 when he was a medical student at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He became an important figure in BLSB's life and married her niece, Amy Leigh Smith in 1880.

Photocopies of correspondence by and pertaining to Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon in the papers of Norman Moore (1847-1922, physician) held in a private collection, together with transcripts of the letters made by Dr Pam Hirsch during the course of her research into writing 'Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon: feminist, artist and rebel' (Chatto and Windus, 1998).

The original letters were loaned by the Moore family and photocopied by Girton College Library staff on the Library's premises in 1995.
