107 Letter from Emily Davies to Barbara Bodichon. Sorry to hear that you will vote for Miss [Louisa] Lumsden. Her presence might be a real embarrassment to the Committee and remind them of former battles - someone else might be a better appointment. My position has been difficult to bear - I mean being the object as public servants are, for every one to stick pins into. I cannot go on at all costs if fresh sources of trouble are introduced without necessity. I have the strongest objection to this movement for putting the Mistress under the control of the students - for that is what it comes to.

124 Letter from Emily Davies to Barbara Bodichon. I have received some notes written by you and Lady Stanley from Miss [Fanny] Metcalfe, which seem to imply that Lady Stanley was empowered to appoint members of the sub committee; as you know this is not the case. It puts a Secretary into a very awkward position when members of a Committee take matters into their own hands and without regard to the decisions of the Committee. No hesitation in putting Miss Metcalf on the sub committee if she is well enough to attend, and I shall propose her name at the next meeting of the Executive Committee.
