The Hergest Trust Archives is the repository for the family and estate papers of the Banks family of Hergest Croft. The Trust is at Hergest Croft, Kington, Herefordshire, the family home created by Dorothy Banks. Dorothy Banks (nee Alford) 1865-1937 came up to Girton to read Natural Sciences 1885-88. She married William Hartland Banks in 1894. Her younger sister, Margaret Alford 1868-1951 came to Girton to read Classics 1887-90. She went on to lecture at Westfield College then to become head of the Department of Latin at Bedford College, London. She published editions of Livy, Tacitus, Cicero etc., as well as working on a Latin-English dictionary for Oxford University Press.

Copies of some Girton related material in the Banks Papers held by the Hergest Trust including 'Girton College Bye Laws' 1886, 'Girton College Entrance and Scholarship Examinations' 1891 and 'Girton College Gamble Prize' (list of regulations) 1891. Included with these are extracts from letters from Alfred H Cooke to Dorothy Alford 1888-89 (A H Cooke conducted services at Girton on Sunday evenings), a copy of the Banks Lecture 1998, 'Isn't it spiffing to be a Girton Girl: Dorothy Banks 1865-1937' given by J B Sinclair and RDW Fenn, and a description of 'Bundle ALF 7:1' letters etc to Dorothy Alford at Cambridge 1887. There is also a complete calendar of the Banks Archive: Alford Papers, 1996.

Given by the Revd. Dr RDW Fenn, Archivist to the Hergest Trust, 1998.
